In the earliest years of production, other grand feu colours were used for painted decoration besides cobalt – namely red and green. Other underglaze colours had to be fired at lower temperatures in smaller muffle furnaces. And so alongside artists who only used blue underglaze paintings, a new breed of “polychrome painters” arose. This small plate is an example of an excellently executed, very early painting of vibrantly coloured flowers accompanies by a monogram, testifying to the high skill of painters at the porcelain manufactory early in its history.
